Services helps students and alumni identify and pursue satisfying careers through
a variety of
programs and services. We also offer programs to assist those employers
who are seeking talented students
or alumni

FIRST
YEAR
- Visit your Career Counselor
/ Field Experience Representative
- Plan a significant work,
service or travel experience for the summer between your first and second
year
- Attend the Majors Fair
offered by
Pre-Major
Advising Services each fall
- See your Career Counselor
for resume help
- Attend one or more of
the career fairs on campus; look around, meet some employers
- Ask your Career Counselor
to administer the MBTI or other assessment to clarify your skills and interests
- Attend all your classes
and earn the best possible grades (your first year sets the tone for your
future)
Why? Youll gather
objective information to help choose a major, get experience and be more comfortable
approaching
faculty, campus advisors and employers.
SECOND
YEAR
- Meet with your Career
Counselor to update your resume and start work on a career plan
- If you have not already
done so, register on the Career Services web site HERE
for co-ops/internships
- Meet your Field Experience
Coordinator and attend a Welcome to Field Experience workshop
(click HERE for the schedule)
- Apply for summer internships,
study abroad something that allows you to try on a new
role or learn new skills
- Attend career development
workshops for your major; ask about job searching on the web
- Attend Rossman Alumni
Career Forums that interest you and ask the alumni how they got their first
jobs (watch for ads in the Collegian)
- Attend as many career
and internship/co-op fairs as you can
- Keep up those grades!
Get to know your faculty.
Why? Youll have a
working resume with at least one significant experience, be more self-aware,
have an idea about what
employers are looking for and how some alumni translated
their UMass education into interesting careers.
THIRD
YEAR
- Meet with your Career
Counselor to update your resume and career plan
- Work with your Field
Experience Coordinator to locate an Internship or Co-op
- Find out if your intended
career requires additional education and attend the annual Graduate and Professional
School
Information Day. Take appropriate entrance exams.
- Attend career fairs,
collect business cards and ask employers what kinds of opportunities they
offer
- Attend Rossman Alumni
Career Forums that interest you and ask the alumni how they got their first
jobs (watch for ads in the Collegian)
- Build skills in workshops
on job search skills, interviewing techniques, and related topics.
Why? By this time, updating
your resume is routine. You may have interviewed a number of times, know more
about your
employment options and have obtained experience to help you evaluate
those options.
FOURTH
YEAR
- Update your resume with
your co-op/internship/summer experiences; review your career plan
- Find out if your intended
career requires additional education and attend the annual Graduate and Professional
School
Information Day. Take appropriate entrance exams.
- Its not too late
to arrange a co-op or internship for spring semester
- If you have not already
done so, register on the Career Services web site HERE
for jobs and interviews
- Participate in campus
recruiting; hundreds of organizations come to UMass each year to interview
talented individuals
- Participate in career
fairs, make contacts, be prepared to interview on the spot
- Interview for a range
of opportunities; remain open to new possibilities
- If you still dont
have experience, check out our Second Chance Co-op Program
- Review online job listings
and apply to the ones that are a good match for you
- Inform your Career Counselor
of your post graduate plans.
Results: Youll be
on your way to your first destination AND you will have done it
gradually, with planning and way less
stress. Youll be more confident
