FACULTY RESPONSIBILITIES Why do students need a faculty sponsor? Students are not receiving credit for working, they are receiving credit for the academic component of that work. Hopefully, this learning will be reflected in the academic materials students turn in to their sponsors. The faculty sponsor usually requires a paper, journal, or project that reflects what students have learned from their experiences. The faculty then awards a grade for their work. What is the Academic Contract? The Academic contract is an agreement between the faculty sponsor, the student and the Field Experience Office. Together the student and faculty member work out what the student will do for the credits. They are also going to discuss what type of credit and how many credits the student will receive for their work. The specifics of credit arrangements vary from department to department, but there is basic credit information on the back of the contract. It should be noted that some departments have their own academic contracts and these will also be accepted by the Field Experience Office. Once this agreement is worked out with the faculty and the student, the Field Experience Office agrees to send the faculty member information on the student while they are out on placement. This information should help the faculty to evaluate the students experience. How many credits can interns receive? Faculty members should check with their departments for the amount and type of credit students can receive in their department. Students can receive a maximum of 18 credits over the course of their academic careers. As a rough guide, the Field Experience program estimates that students should work 40 hours per credit. This may vary within departments and at different organizations. What will faculty receive from the Field Experience Office? Over the course of a students placement the faculty sponsor will receive the following from the Field Experience Office:
