FE_Internship_Process

You need to have 45 credits and a 2.0 GPA overall in order to do an internship. Dean's approval is required if you do not meet the 45 credit requirement.  Placements must be completed prior to graduation, or you can ask your counselor about our Second Chance Program.

1. Attend an Introduction to Internships & Co-ops meeting
2. Register on-line for Career Services database eRecruiting
3. Visit with Career Services staff to develop a professional resume
4. Upload your resume to Career Services website and begin to apply to interesting internships
5. Inform the Field Experience office when you accept an internship
6.Arrange for a Faculty Sponsor and complete the Academic Contract
7. Registering your credits
8. Turn in all your paper work to your Field Experience Representative

Arrange for a Faculty Sponsor and complete the Academic Contract
  • To clarify the academic content and expectations of the placement, read the back of the Academic Contract for more details
  • The Faculty Sponsor should fill in the course number, number of credits, and sign to authorize the credits.
What Faculty will receive from the Field Experience Office

Over the course of a student’s placement the faculty sponsor will receive the following from the Field Experience Office:
  • A copy of the signed academic contract

  • A copy of the student’s position description as filled out by the student’s supervisor

  • A copy of the student’s self-assessed mid-term evaluation

  • A copy of the supervisor’s final evaluation of the student’s performance

These materials are used along with what the student submits to determine the student's grade

How do faculty grade students on their internships?

Faculty who are awarding department credit should check with the department scheduling representative. UMass 298Y credits are mandatory pass/fail and must be submitted through SPIRE online.

Registering your credits

Semester credits:
  • UMass 298Y credits are registered by the Field Experience Office
  • Departmental Credits--check with your department on the registration procedure

Summer and Winter session credits are registered through Continuing Education and are subject to their normal tuition and fee charges per credit.  Your Field Experience Representative will give you the Continuing Ed registration form when you turn in your academic contract A maximum of Four (4) credits are allowed for Winter session Internships and a maximum of Fourteen (14) credits are allowed for Summer session.

Students can receive a maximum of Eighteen (18) credits over the course of their academic career. As a rough guide, the Field Experience program estimates that students should work 40 hours per credit. This may vary within departments and at different organizations.
