The University will dedicate its Year 2000
Time Capsule in a campus celebration Monday, May 1 at 4 p.m. on the
library lawn. In addition to a brief dedication ceremony, the event
will feature music, T-shirts, food, and prizes, as well as "Pictures
for Posterity," an opportunity for students to have their photographs
taken for placement in the time capsule.
The celebration is sponsored by the millennium
committee, established last fall by Chancellor David K. Scott to consider
what articles would be appropriate to put into a time capsule to be
installed in the crypt of the Old Chapel and opened 100 years from now.
"
The entire campus community is invited
to attend our celebration on May 1," says Susan Whitbourne, professor
of Psychology, who co-chairs the committee along with History professor
Ron Story. "The purpose of this exciting project is to showcase our
University in the year 2000." The time capsule is being fabricated of
lead-coated copper by craftsmen from Physical Plant. When completed,
it will measure approximately 36"x 24" x 24". The copper box will be
soldered closed, then placed in a repository made from brick saved from
the recently renovated tower of the Old Chapel, and soapstone counter-tops
salvaged from Goessman Lab.
The time capsule will actually be sealed
and installed in the Old Chapel next fall. According to Whitbourne,
students, faculty, staff, and alumni may still suggest small items to
be placed in the time capsule. Items should be commemorative of the
campus in the year 2000, or recall its history. Photos, articles, letters,
and other small memorabilia are preferred, and individuals who suggest
the items should be prepared to provide them.
