Championship Summary
Slammers defeated AE Phi Champs 15-12, 7-15, 20-15
Pitted in this years
final were Slammers
and AE Phi Champs.
Slammers advanced to the final with a
win-by-forfeit over Homewreckers, while
AE Phi defeated Sigma Kappa 15-3,
15-6 in a semifinal. Down a player in game
one of the final, AE Phi found themselves
quickly behind 11-1 as Slammers’ Luci
Alliance-Valcimond pounded one unstoppable serve after another. AE Phi battled
back with two runs of five straight points
behind strong play from Kaitlin Campbell and Gillian Helfman to make the score 12-12.
Slammers capitalized on the 6-5 player
advantage with three straight points to
take the first game 15-12.
The second
game was a different story. Still down a
player, AE Phi rolled to an 8-4 lead behind
the play from Courtney Craft, Annemarie
Wacha & Christina Sangluolo. AE Phi
rolled to a 15-7 victory. At the 3rd game,
AE Phi was at full strength. The rally
scoring of the rubber game favored
Slammers as Alliance-Valcimond dominated with her serve. In no time,
Slammers held the 16-5 lead. Once
again, though, AE Phi did not quit and
battled back to 16-14. Then, with
Slammers at match point, Jen Hillman,
the AE Phi player who “arrived from the
cold,” faulted on her serve to give
Slammers the 20-15 championship win.
