Men's Table Tennis Spring 2013

Champion: Evan Hill

Championship Match Summary

Evan Hill defeated Ryan Becker 11-9, 7-11, 11-8

On a chilly Saturday afternoon in February, 16 competitors came out to try to crown themselves as Intramural Table Tennis Champions of the University. Two competitors, Ryan Becker and Evan Hill, showed throughout the tournament that they were a level above the rest. The championship game between Ryan and Evan was fit to be one for the ages.

In game one of the best two out of three series, Ryan Becker got off to an amazing start. He jumped out to an early 5-1 lead with an amazing return on a haymaker smack by Evan Hill. The early deficit did not discourage Hill, however, as he quickly got back into the game with 5 of the next 6 points to make it tied up at 6-6. Back and forth flurries kept it knotted up at 9-9 until Evan scored two straight to win the first game 11-9.

In game two it seemed very probable that Becker would come back harder, and that is exactly what he did. Again, Becker got out to a tremendous start with a 5-2 lead. It seemed to be déjà vu as Evan Hill again came storming back to tie it at 6-6. However this time, Ryan seemed to have a lot more answers to the attacks by Evan. Ryan ended up scoring two straight points to seal the game two victory with a score of 11-7.

Game 3 was truly unpredictable and could have gone either way. Both Hill and Becker showed moments of greatness with tremendous attack and return shots. Becker continued his streak of starting hot early and jumped out to a 4-0 lead. On the next rally, Evan Hill hit a huge power shot which seemed to completely shift the momentum. Hill rode this momentum to power himself back into the game and eventually took a 10-8 lead. On the match point, Evan Hill sealed the deal making him the first ever University of Massachusetts Intramural Table Tennis Champion.
