Men's Spikeball Spring 2013

Champions: Diet Dr. Kelp (Ezra Dantowitz, Jonathan Bannon)

  Championship Game Summary:

Diet Dr. Kelp 21, JR Spikes 19

On the night of February 5, 2013, the first ever Spikeball tournament was held inside the Recreation Center at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. The competition was fierce inside the spinning studio with two games going at a time. Diet Dr. Kelp had the easiest road to the championship getting a forfeit in their first game and defeating their opponent by a wide margin in the semifinals. JR Spikes also had a forfeit to put them into the semis, but had a much more competitive game that ended 24-22. After clearing out one of the Spikeball nets and the rest of the competition, JR Spikes was ready to take on Diet Dr. Kelp for the championship.

The game started off with both teams going back and forth until it was tied at four apiece. Then Ezra Dantowicz and Jon Bannon of Diet Dr. Kelp jumped ahead scoring three points in a row to put them ahead 7-4. But JR Spikes answered back with three points of their own to tie it again at seven. No team could to find a way to get a good lead until JR Spikes jumped ahead by four points to make it 13-9. Once again, Ezra and Jon had an answer and knotted it again at 13. After both teams scored two more points, Joey Dinh and Ray Simmons of JR Spikes jumped ahead by another three and made it 18-15.

It seemed like the game was getting away from Diet Dr. Kelp, until they scored four straight points to make it 19-18. No one knew who was going to take the championship at this point. It went back and forth until it was finally 20-19 with Diet Dr. Kelp serving to win the game and the crown. Joey and Ray weren’t ready to give up just yet. They got the serve back and were looking to knot it up at 20, but Diet Dr. Kelp got the serve back again looking for the win. After an intense volley, Diet Dr. Kelp got the point and won the championship with a final score of 21-19.
