Championship Game Summary
Tosches Our Salads 3, Speaker City 2

The co-rec final between Speaker City & Tosches Our Salad was a game for the ages. Never before in the history of a co-rec intramural softball championship has a game lasted an astounding 22 innings! In the 1st inning, Speaker City’s Matt Emond singled to left and advanced to second after the leftfielder had trouble fielding the ball. Natalie Shea followed with a groundout to the pitcher’s area, advancing Emond to third. Garrett Hoffman’s groundout plated Emond to put Speaker City ahead 1-0. The 2nd and 3rd innings yielded no runs for both teams. In the 4th inning, Speaker City’s Ben Summerhayes ripped a triple down the leftfield line. Alison Hutson followed with a single to score Summerhayes. Three straight fly outs ended the inning. TOS responded in their half of the inning with consecutive singles, two fly outs and then a single by Chris Leidel to score a run. Speaker City led 2-1. The 5th through the 9th innings were scoreless. Standout defensive plays from Jenna Olem and Danielle Murphy in the 6th and 8th innings kept Speaker City ahead. Not to be outdone was Caitlin Strack of TOS, who also had a pair of web gems, both times keeping runners from scoring. Speaker City went quietly in the 10th to give TOS their final at-bat to tie the game. Chris Bowles led off with a single to left and Sarah Hurd followed with a ground ball to the pitcher’s area to advance Bowles to second. Later, with two outs and a runner on third, Jon Tosches ripped a line drive to CF to tie the game and send it into extra innings.

The 11th-17th innings went by with multiple 3 ups-3 downs for both teams & very few base hits. In the 18th & 19th innings, TOS had a chance to score a run, but a Speaker City double play & bang-bang out at first kept TOS off the board. The 20th & 21st innings were scoreless. Remember number 22? Alas, in the bottom of the 22nd inning, Joe Rosales reached first with a single and advanced to second on a fielder’s choice. After another fly out, it was up to Tosches again. His groundball up the middle was just out of shortstop Emond’s reach. Rounding third, Rosales slipped and fell, but quickly scrambled to his feet to score the winning run. Tosches Our Salad snatched victory in dramatic fashion in this thriller of a championship.
