Championship Game SummaryChampionship Game Summary
NIYF 2, Balls Deep 0

The atmosphere was intense as the teams NIYF  and Balls Deep played for the co-rec championship. In this double-elimination tournament, Balls Deep came into the game with one loss. To take the championship, they had to win two games in a row.  With the help of some big plays by Steve Bowler, Balls Deep won the first game 4-0 to force a winner-take-all game. Neither team scored in the first three innings, even though each team put runners on base. In the 4th inning, NIYF’s Tim MacDonald singled to leftfield with one out and scored on a Jon Warne pop that dropped behind 2nd base. NIYF was unable to score any more runs and played good defense to keep Balls Deep off the bases. The 5th was a bada-bing, bada-boom inning as the three batters from both teams went hitless. The 6th inning was also scoreless. Where is all the offense, you ask? NIYF began the 7th with two outs, followed by hits from Michael Caggiano and MacDonald. The next batter was thrown out at first to end the top of the inning. In the bottom of the 7th with one out, Pat McKenna gave Balls Deep some hope by getting on base. Unfortunately, the next two batters made outs to preserve NIYF’s 1-0 lead. NIYF’s first two batters in the 8th and final inning made outs. Jonathan Baum and Becky Gray followed with back-to-back hits. Sean Kern’s rip down the rightfield line scored Baum for the 2-0 lead. Balls Deep needed some offense in their final at-bat. NIYF came up big on the defensive end, particularly with a stunning catch from Baum. NIYF held on to take the final 2-0.
