Championship Game Summary
Defending Chumps 5, Hit It 2 2

Defending Chumps walked onto the field with the swag that only a defending champion could have. Their aura of confidence and experience was evident early on. However, Hit It 2 didn’t come this far just to be intimidated. Coming off of a six-game win streak, they forgot what losing felt like. With these two teams coming into the game in red hot form, it was bound to be an amazing finish to the season.

Defending Chumps looked to flex their muscles early when Matt Lamoureaux dribbled the ball from his half, beat four defenders and, with only the goalie to beat, hit the shot far and wide. Unfortunately, two consecutive goals were scored by Defending Chumps under controversial circumstances. Twice the Hit It 2 goalie was trying to punt the ball away when he went too far and was called for handling the ball outside of his box. Andrew Krikorian scored both times from the resulting free kicks, both assisted by the helpful Karim Azeb. The calls were considered controversial because the boundary lines for the goalie box were barely visible, even umder the bright lights.

Despite being ahead two goals, DC kept pushing the tempo and looked to add their lead. Their efforts were rewarded at the 12-minute mark when Azeb turned something out of nothing. With little wiggle room, he squirted past two defenders and took aim at the far post. The ball took a lucky deflection off a Hit It 2 defender and past the goalie. Down three goals, Hit It 2 looked slightly demoralized despite captain John Frazier's urging to remain strong and push forward. To make matters worse, Defending Chumps defender Max Gutmans offered up a spectacular display of skill and beat four defenders before coolly slotting home a goal past the stunned Hit It 2 keeper with five minutes left half in the first half.

Hit It 2 seemed relieved when the officials blew the halftime whistle. Even though most teams would be dejected after being down 4-0 at halftime, Hit It 2 took it as a challenge and came out of the break with a full head of steam. Derek Diaz came out of goal for Hit It 2 and spearheaded an attack that lead to the team’s first shot on goal. He then assisted Sam Warton that lead to a shot that went off the post. Hit It 2 enjoyed the lion's share of the possession for the first five minutes of the second half. Krikorian of the Defending Chumps inserted himself back into the game and completely took control. He made several driving runs but couldn’t finish off the shots. Even the Hit It 2 sideline watched in awe as Krikorian controlled the midfield as a boss. He picked out his teammates with precision passes and seemed to have the ball glued to his foot. Diaz of Hit It 2 tried his best to match the effort by attacking the DC defense. He had a 25-yard free kick chance, but put the shot just inches wide.

After taking it easy for most of the game, Azeb decided to put the game out of reach with eight minutes left in regulation. He picked up the ball at the halfway line and took on and beat three defenders before easily side-footing the shot past the goalie. Sadly, that gave the Defending Chumps the five-goal lead that was required to invoke the mercy rule. Despite a 5-0 score line, this was a riveting and closely-contested game between two top-notch teams. Moments of individual brilliance propelled the Defending Chumps to consecutive intramural championships. Being bitter about the loss did not stop the Hit It 2 team from congratulating the Defending Chumps, who were clearly better on this day.
