Championship Game Summary
Debate Team 4, Pretty Good 3

The men’s final pitted two first place teams – Pretty Good, with an undefeated record, versus Debate Team, who went 4-1 during league play and knocked off three teams in the playoffs to reach the championship. In the final, ball possession see-sawed until Debate Team’s Gerald Shkoza got his team on the board eight minutes into the first half.  Debate Team already had three good shots on goalkeeper Alex Sachetti, but Pretty Good had yet to put a ball on Debate’s keeper Eric DeBlois. Pretty Good’s Pete “Peteybear” Lomuscio later found success when he maneuvered past a Debate Team defender & put the ball past DeBlois. With seven minutes left in the first half & tied at one, Shkoza wasted no time on the ensuing kickoff to get back the lead. With his second goal of the game, Debate Team led 2-1 at halftime.

In the second half, it took Pretty Good only five minutes & an Andrew Wise goal to tie the game. With momentum on their side and more good shots on goal, it took expert saves from keeper DeBlois & help from teammate Hiro Sakurai with a head-saving play to keep Debate Team in the game. A few minutes later, impressive footwork from Pretty Good’s John Andrade allowed him to get around a Debate Team defender for an open shot at goal. Andrade scored to put his team ahead 3-2. Can you say Gerald Shkoza? Yes, once again this scoring machine took over the game and brought his team back into contention with his third goal of the afternoon. On this goal, Shkoza beat defender & Pretty Good captain Sean Settles and keeper Sacchetti and left the two toppling over each other. Settles decided to switch positions and try his skill against Debate Team’s DeBlois. Settles put a good ball on DeBlois that the keeper bobbled momentarily but ultimately made the save. With time winding down in the game, it looked as if these two highly competitive and equally skilled teams would go to overtime. Except…don’t forget about Shkoza. With one minute left in regulation, Shkoza ran down a loose ball and keyed in on Sacchetti. Fortunes were shining down on Debate Team this day as Shkoza notched his fourth goal of the day for Debate Team’s 4-3 lead. Pretty Good tried mightily to muster some offense but time expired in the 2nd half. Debate Team captured the title in this thriller of a soccer final.
