Championship Game Summary
Superstars 2, Red 1

Two-time defending champion Superstars went undefeated through the regular season and playoffs, capturing their 3rd championship. This final however, was a nip-n­tuck battle into double overtime. Early on, Superstars’ technical skills were on fine display, but Red had the lion’s share of possession, and the ball spent much time on Superstars’ side of the field. It was nearly six minutes before Superstars’ Nicole Martignetti landed the first shot on goal. Red’s Ashley Judge had two excellent scoring chances on goalie Kelly Grasso late in the first half. The half ended scoreless.

Early in the 2nd half, Red’s Emily Hronik stole the ball deep in Superstars’ territory and sent it to the back of the net for the Red 1-0 lead. Later in the half, Jenn Mikkola took a shot from 15 meters and sent the ball past out-of-position Red goalie Emily Knight and the game was headed to overtime. One scoreless overtime forced a second overtime. Superstars took command in the overtime. Mikkola notched the winning goal and her second tally off a nifty pass & dribble run by Mikkola and Martignetti. Keeper Knight grabbed for the ball but couldn’t hold on. Superstars held on for the 2-1 victory.
