The Boyz

Championship Game SDummary
The Boyz 1, Black-Outs 0

The Boyz, 4-1 during league play, advanced to the championship by walloping Plumbers 13-2 and UB Funked 7-1 and nipping Della Chi 4-3. Their opponent in the champion ship, Black-outs, were 3-2 in the league and had a tougher road to the final by narrowly defeating Alpha Delta Phi 2-1, Celtic 2-1 and Los Diablos 2-0.

In the first half, both teams played conservatively. Mark Eusebio of the Boyz had the best scoring chance as he moved in all alone on goalkeeper Tony DeSousa, but DeSousa made an outstanding point-blank save. Neither team tallied in the first half. In the second half, both teams opened up the offense and, probably due to fatigue, both defenses allowed more scoring chances. Rick Barker of the Black-outs nearly scored in the first five minutes, but his dead-on shot was saved by Boyz goalkeeper Jacob WiIlet.

With less than 10 minutes left in regulation, Seth Auget of the Boyz captured a loose ball in the penalty area, moved in on keeper DeSousa, who went down to make the save, but missed left on the open net. Then, with 2 minutes to play, the Boyz' Matt Goncalves ripped a shot from near midfield that sailed over the DeSousa’s head, rammed the crossbar and bounced back to the defense. Regulation ended in a scoreless tie.

After 2 five-minute overtimes, neither team had scored. It was fitting that this superbly-played championship be decided by penalty kicks. Both teams’ shooters matched each other until the second round of kicks when Matt Goncalves’s boot was the deciding goal as the Boyz captured the final 1-0.
