Men's Soccer Fall 1997

In Gerlund

Championship Game Summary
In-Gerlund 1, Super Powers 0

In-Gerlund went 4-1 during the season and advanced to the championship with no easy effort, beating last year’s champs Delta Chi 4-3 in penalty kicks and Lanaxes 1-0 in overtime. Super Powers, also 4-1 in league play, dispatched Prince International 5-2, Sigma Alpha Mu 3-0 and A.C. UMASS 3-2 to reach the final.

In the championship, In-Gerlund’s controlled passing almost hit the mark as left flank Paul Caddy hit a blistering half-volley that sailed just over the right bar. Scott Tarka from Super Powers nearly put his team in the lead but his shot went wide right. In-Gerlund, with their composed defense headed by sweeper Adam Williams, was able to diffuse any Super Powers offensive threats.

In the second half with the score at zero, Super Powers went on an offensive tear, but Dan Costa’s best opportunity hit the crossbar. The scoreless battle ended at the 13-minute mark when In-Gerlund’s Gijs Bertels converted a penalty kick awarded for handling in the penalty area. Super Powers nearly tied the game minutes later but Tarka’s uncontested header sailed wide, assuring an In-Gerlund 1-0 victory.
