Delta Chi A 3, Delerium 3 (Penalty Kicks)

Twenty five teams qualified for the 1996 Men’s Soccer Playoffs. Delirium defeated The Crew 8-4 and Sigma Alpha Mu 4-2. Delta Chi A handled Dynamite 3-0 and Digworm 8-2 before squeeking by Silly Putty and Amherst United with identical 3-2 scores. Under the lights, both keepers Justin Reiner and J.D. McConnell were stalwart in goal and the half ended scoreless.

James Martino scored 4 minutes into the 2nd half. Bill Laporte tied the game up on a beautiful scissors kick. Derek Phinney put Delta Chi back on top. Jason Bridge tied the game for Delirium. Tim Anderson’s blast gave Delirium their first lead. Derek Phinney’s goal sent the game into overtime. Neither team scored during the two overtime periods. After five penalty kicks by each team the score was still tied 3-3. Delirium missed its first sudden death kick. Derek Phinney capped a huge game by scoring the game-winner.
