Championship Summary
Natty Ice defeats Brew Crew, 2 games to 0

Eight teams qualified for the 2008 ice hockey tournament. Natty Ice (5-0-1) finished undefeated in league play and entered the tournament as the number one seed from the Patrick Division. Natty Ice shut out District 5 (8-0) and defeated a strong Top Dogs squad 3-1 in their semifinal. The number one seed from the Smythe Division, 30 Racks, easily handled UMass Slackshots (5-1). Their semifinal opponent, Brew Crew, was the number two seed from the Patrick Division. Brew Crew prevailed in the 5-1 upset to line up the intra-division championship series.

Natty Ice came out firing and peppered Michael Nashawaty in goal. Cory Arsenault put Natty on the board at the 13:27 mark. Sean Murphy netted the first goal for Brew Crew and tied the game at the 6:21 mark. The rest of the 1st period and almost ten minutes of the second period were scoreless, due to the excellent play of Tyler Krzanowski and Nashawaty in goal. At the 5:52 mark, Michael Daniels scored the last goal of the period for Natty Ice. With Nashawaty impenetrable in goal, Daniels scored the game winner at the 9:45 mark. Douglas Kendrick stretched the lead to 4-1 with his lone goal at the 7:05 mark.  Sean Murphy’s second goal cut the lead to 4-2 at the 1:49 mark, but Jake LaFauce pushed it right back to 5-2 with the last goal of the game at the :27 of the 3rd period.

The expectations were high after Natty Ice took a commanding 1-0 lead in the best 2 of 3 championship. But Brew Crew was not about to coronate Natty Ice just yet. As game two got underway, it was Brew Crew supplying the early pressure through nine minutes of play. At 6:01 in the 1st period, Mike Shilalie scored on an assist from Liam Connolly to give Brew Crew the 1-0 lead. The score served as a wake up call to Natty Ice. It was clear they were going to have to work for their shirts. The score remained 1-0 at the end of one, but Natty had regained its swagger and started to dominate the offensive end. At 14:00 minutes into the 2nd period, Brew Crew committed a costly roughing penalty that led to Arsenault scoring on a power play goal from Dan McCarron. Brew Crew, now back at full strength, continued to garner offensive opportunities, but couldn’t find the net. With 5:45 left in the 2nd, they got a break. Natty was penalized for an elbow that resulted in a two-minute man advantage. Undaunted, Natty dug in their heels to kill the penalty, only allowing three shots on goal.

The 3rd period began with Natty down a man due to tripping, but Brew Crew received a game misconduct at 12:05 that would lead to Arsenault getting his second goal on an assist from Mike Cahoon. This proved to be the game winner as Brew Crew couldn’t muster enough of an offensive threat. Patrick Fitzmaurice added an unassisted goal for Natty Ice to make it 3-1, but this one was all but over. Natty Ice took the crown after two physical and competitive games.
