Championship Game Summary
Head Foundation 5, Gym Class 1

Twelve teams in two divisions vied for the championship with Gym Class finishing atop the Patrick division and Head Foundation co-owning first place in the Smythe division. In game one of the championship, Jeff McGrath put Head Foundation up 1-0 at the 8:43 mark. Tom Vassil capitalized on a rebound save from goalie Mike Johnson to score at the 3:35 mark. Ken Bateman scored a nifty goal on Head Foundation goalie Alex Elliot to put Gym Class on the board as the first period ended. In the 2nd period, Richard Griffin picked up the puck at the red line, took his defender with him and put the puck through Johnson’s legs to go up 3-1 at the 4:03 mark. Gym Class’s David Doucet scored the shorthanded goal to finish the period down 3-2.

Head Foundation’s Mike Bishop scored in the 3rd period to give his team a two-goal lead. Seven minutes later, John Binieris scored for Gym Class. One man down and with one minute to go, Bateman scored his second goal and tied the game. Overtime loomed large, but Griffin rifled a shot past Johnson to score his second goal with :27 left in the game. Head Foundation won a thrilling game one 5-4. In game two, goalies Elliot and Johnson made one huge save after another. Johnson gave up the lone score in the 1st period to Head Foundtion’s Kevin Recinito. Elliot kept the lid on any Gym Class scorers. Mike Vienneau added a second Head Foundation goal. Gym Class’s Bateman scored to bring the score. to 2-1.

At the 0:33 mark, Matt English’s goal stunned Head Foundation and forced an overtime. At the 4:15 mark of overtime, Binieris got his second goal of the series to give Gym Class the 3-2 win and tie the series at 1-1. In game three, Head Foundation roared out of the gate and never looked back. Brian Bullock, Griffin and Vienneau all scored first period goals. Even more devasting was the injury to Gym Class’s top-notch scorer Bateman, who left the game at the end of the first period. Luke Evans scored the only goal for Gym Class. Vienneau and Victor Matchak added goals in the 3rd period. Head Foundation went on to capture their first title in an impressive 5-1 win from a gallant Gym Class squad.
