Championship Summary
Lovers defeated Celtics 2-3, 4-1, 3-1
Eight teams from two divisions
qualified for the ice hockey
tournament. The Lovers took their
unbeaten record into the playoffs
and dispatched the Hogs 6-1 and
the Nads 4-1. The Celtics finished
first in their division and edged by
4Q2 3-2 and won by overtime shots
over perennial hockey power
Delano's 4-3.
In game one of the final, Celtics
stunned the Lovers 3-2. Jerry
Wainio, Todd Fillion and Mike
Shields scored for the Celtics. In game two, Dan Lanigan from Bill
Morrissey put the Lovers ahead at
7:08 of the 1st period. Lanigan's
second goal came as the period
ended. In the 2nd period, Morrissey
and Ryan Andrew put the game out
of reach.
The Lovers took the
second game 4-1 to tie the series at
a game a piece.
In the rubber game, both goalies
held tough deep into the 1st period
until 5:10 when the Lovers Andrew
faked left and shot right to sneak
one past Celtics goalie Mike
Buckley. That lone goal stood up
until 10:42 of the 3rd period.
Lanigan found the back of the net to
give the Lovers a 2-0 lead.
Buckley's superb play kept his team
in the game, but Celtics Corey
Black got his team on the board.
With 2:02 left in the game, Andrew
tallied again to ice the game and give
the Lovers a 3-1 victory and the title.
