The Lovers

Championship Summary
Lovers defeated Celtics 2-3, 4-1, 3-1

Eight teams from two divisions qualified for the ice hockey tournament. The Lovers took their unbeaten record into the playoffs and dispatched the Hogs 6-1 and the Nads 4-1. The Celtics finished first in their division and edged by 4Q2 3-2 and won by overtime shots over perennial hockey power Delano's 4-3.

In game one of the final, Celtics stunned the Lovers 3-2. Jerry Wainio, Todd Fillion and Mike Shields scored for the Celtics. In game two, Dan Lanigan from Bill Morrissey put the Lovers ahead at 7:08 of the 1st period. Lanigan's second goal came as the period ended. In the 2nd period, Morrissey and Ryan Andrew put the game out of reach.

The Lovers took the second game 4-1 to tie the series at a game a piece. In the rubber game, both goalies held tough deep into the 1st period until 5:10 when the Lovers Andrew faked left and shot right to sneak one past Celtics goalie Mike Buckley. That lone goal stood up until 10:42 of the 3rd period. Lanigan found the back of the net to give the Lovers a 2-0 lead. Buckley's superb play kept his team in the game, but Celtics Corey Black got his team on the board. With 2:02 left in the game, Andrew tallied again to ice the game and give the Lovers a 3-1 victory and the title.
