Night & Day defeated Blood Sweat & Beers 4-2, 5-3
Seven teams qualified for the 1997 Spring Ice Hockey Playoffs. Night & Day was undefeated in league play and had a first round bye. They won a tough semi-final game against The Steamers, the defending champions, 2-1. Blood, Sweat & Beers, last semester’s Smocks, finished second. They easily handled The Sabres and won-by-forfeit over The Mother
In game 1, Night & Day took the lead in the best of three series by taking the first game 4-2.
In game 2, John Curry assisted by Chris Smith and Phil Dorman put the puck past BS&B goalie, Gil Bach, at 10:45 of the 1st period. Both goalies were impenetrable. Jonas Killeen took control of the puck on a breakaway and put it past Gil Bach with 2:10 left in the 1st period. Down by two goal, with 2 seconds left, Kyle Staplin put BS&B on the board. Early in the second period, Rob Searle assisted by Rick Lundgren tied the game.
Less than 10 seconds later, at 11:03, Keith Chouinard assisted by Chuck Sturtevant got by Mike Montessi to give BS&B their first lead of the series. Both goalies made one spectacular save after another. With 3:02 left in 2nd period, Ryan Lavangie scored the tying goal unassisted. Phil Dorman’s goal with
2:18 left in the 2nd period gave Night the lead 4-3. BS&B pressed furiously for the tying goal, but Mike Montessi would not give way. With 2:42 left Jonas Killeen’s second goal of the game iced the victory and completed Night & Day’s perfect season.
