Men's Ice Hockey Fall 1997

Night &Day

Championship Summary
Night & Day 3, Blood Sweat & Beers 2

Ten teams qualified for the 1997 fall Intramural Ice Hockey tournament. League tiebreaking procedures were used to sort out the log jam for first place. Head-to-head records resulted in Blood, Sweat & Beers receiving the first place seed, Hawks receiving the second seed and Night & Day receiving the third seed. Blood eked out a 2-1 victory over the Motherpuckers and blanked Rusty Blades 4-0 to gain their third consecutive berth in the championship series. Night & Day easily handled the Nads 5-1 and held off a strong Hawks squad 5-3 to gain their second consecutive championship.

In game one, Night & Day took the upper hand in the best of three series by taking the first game 4-2, the identical score posted in the Intramural spring final. In game two, Charles Sturtevant quickly put the puck past Night & Day goalie Joe Albano at 13:52 of the first period. Both goalies, especially Aaron Henry for BS&B, were very solid. John Curry tied the score with 5:05 left in the first period. Doug Weber, assisted by Rob Searle, put BS&B ahead to end the first period.

Both goalies were impenetrable and the second period ended without additional scoring. Henry was peppered with shots on goal and made one spectacular save after another. With 7:18 left in the game, Curry’s second goal tied the game. Again both goalies fended off all corners and the game ended tied 2-2. In the five minute sudden death overtime, every shot on goal could win a championship or extend the series. A shoot outloomed large when, with 0:32 ticks left, Brian Conz’s slapshot blew by Henry’s gloved hand. Night & Day was elated with a second consecutive title.
