Championship Game Summary
Cleveland 57, Basketball Team 51

Team Cleveland jumped to an early lead with a potent fastbreak offense, strong drives to the basket and blazing ball movement and pushed their lead to 20-9 with just over 5 minutes left in the first half. Kyle Wiggins and Nicholas Coutinho each contributed important minutes for Cleveland by controlling the boards and converting scoring opportunities. Basketball Team played with energy during the first half but had trouble converting on offense and over-reached a couple times on their press. Cleveland continued to dominate and led 30-14 at the half.

Basketball Team came back with a vengeance during the second half, leading off with a three pointer from Alex Porter. Led by Sean Mahegan and Mason Pires, Basketball Team fought their way back with stingy defense and solid low post offense. The press, which struggled in the first half, put newly-realized pressure on Cleveland’s offense, resulting in several turnovers. Cleveland would not just give the game away, though. Jonathan Copeland took a charge in the second half to get his team the ball back and take back momentum. With 7:20 to play in the game, Cleveland called a timeout with a 44-38 lead. Following the timeout, Cleveland played with renewed vigor and added to their lead. The game looked to be out of reach with just over a minute to play and Cleveland leading 50-44. Yet, Basketball Team’s fast-paced and aggressive press/defense continued to keep them in the game. A flurry of three pointers from Benjamin Ciciora kept Basketball Team within reach even as Cleveland converted press-breaking hoops.

Basketball Team could not muster the points to take the lead in the final minute. Cleveland persevered to take the championship by a final score of 57-51. The game was really a tale of two halves, and Basketball Team nearly pulled off an improbable comeback. Both teams put forth admirable efforts and played with outstanding sportsmanship to cap the holiday basketball tournament on a high note.
