Championship Game Summary
Rec Center Swag 51, Throwing Monkeys 31

The holiday co-rec basketball championship was a game of revenge. The #2 seed Rec Center Swag was looking to avenge a loss against the overall #1 seed Throwing Monkeys.

From the opening tip, it was clear that Nick Edson was the x-factor. He was not available for the game that Swag lost to Monkeys. In the final, Edson got the ball off the tip and converted an easy layup. For Throwing Monkeys, Paul Whelan led the scoring charge. He scored 8 of the team's first 10 points. With 10 minutes left in the first half, the Monkeys were trailing 18-10. Edson had already dropped 12, and Kystle Nowak chipped in with four for Swag. However, as Edson went out, so did much of his team’s offense. The Monkeys went on a quick run that had them trailing by one, 18-17. Soeb Usta played great defense to keep Swag’s Nick Mazzeo in check. Usta also had nice feeds to teammate Emily Vartabedian. Swag’s Ryo Gokita added solid play toward the end of the first half. At the end of the first half, Swag led the Monkeys 26-18.

Rec Center Swag came out blazing in the second half. Edson repeatedly attacked the lane for layup and after layup. He crashed his own misses and rebounded hard. He scored his team’s first 8 points of the half. Edson also involved his team in the play by making dishes to Nowak and the dynamic twin duo of Christine and Katie Fitzgerald. The all-around team effort contributed to the 45-24 lead with 10 minutes remaining in the game. Monkeys Nick Hodge nailed a couple threes, but the lead was far too great. The game was mercy-ruled with 5 minutes left in the second half. Rec Center Swag took the championship 51-31.
