Championship Game Summary
Team Diesel 21, Super Seniors 20

The men’s final pitted two battle-tested teams. Team Diesel, after a perfect regular season and two fairly easy playoff games, took on Sleepy Sheep in one quarterfinal. Trailing with under a minute to go and no timeouts left, Mike Kelleher picked off a pass and ran it back for a touchdown to move Team Diesel forward in the playoffs and eventually to the final. Super Seniors made it to the final by knocking off defending champ Bomb Squad in their semifinal game.

Super Seniors carried the momentum of that big win into the championship game when QB Eric Frye hit Jay Kawadler with a touchdown pass on the very first play of the game. Frye would then run in the extra point to give his team an early 7-0 lead. Team Diesel put together a long drive but was unable to put points on the board and turned the ball over on downs on the opponent’s two yard line. Diesel got the ball back shortly when Kelleher came up with a big 3 down sack to force a punt by Super Seniors. Diesel put together another time-consuming drive, kept alive by a big first down reception by Ryan Mulvey. On what would be the last play of the half on 4th and goal, Diesel QB Sean McKenna connected with Ryan Davenport for a much-needed touchdown. McKenna then hit Eddie Abbott for the conversion, knotting the game at 7 at halftime.

Following a punt by Diesel on the first possession of the 2nd half, Frye tried to strike quickly with the deep ball, but Sean Motherway of Diesel came up with an interception, shifting the momentum back to his team. McKenna then hit Davenport for his second TD of the game. The conversion was successful and Diesel had its first lead of the game at 14-7. Super Seniors, feeling the pressure of their first deficit, marched steadily back down the field. Facing 4th and goal, Frye hit Dan McCarthy with a TD pass and then ran in the conversion to tie the game at 14 with just over 6 minutes left. After a goal-line stand, Super Seniors re-claimed the lead when Frye hit Bob Gendron with a long TD pass. A penalty on Super Seniors pushed the conversion attempt back. They failed to add the extra point and led 20-14 with 1:40 left.

Team Diesel was able to manage the clock wisely to put themselves in a position to tie the game. That’s just what they did when McKenna hit center Ed Sawyer with a short TD pass over the middle with 16 seconds on the clock. Knowing the significance of the ensuing conversion, McKenna went to his go-to guy Davenport, who hauled in the go-ahead extra point. Time would run out for Super Seniors as Team Diesel was victorious 21-20.
