Championship Game Summary Winless (0-5) in the regular season, James/Emerson went on an improbable run through the playoffs, winning four games including the 34-18 upset championship win over previously undefeated 1st Stop. Michael Boyle was the story for James/Emerson as he threw for three touchdowns and intercepted three passes. Boyle opened the scoring early, picking off a pass with 3 minutes gone by in the first half and returning it for a touchdown. Boyle then hit Kirk Massa on the 2-point conversion to make the score 8-0. Boyle later connected with Dana Greenlay on an 18-yard touchdown throw. Crystal Therrien hauled in the one-point conversion toss. 1st Stop bounced back as Josh Sturtevant hooked up with Pat Walsh on a 44-yard pass play that left the ball on the one yard line. Cory Norbutus ran the ball in and the score at the half was 18-9. James/Emerson scored on the opening possession of the second half as Hallam Holmes caught a 45-yard TD bomb from Boyle. Boyle continued his air assault with scoring passes to Katherine lacovella and Greenlay, extending the lead to 34-9 with eight minutes remaining. 1st Stop refused to quit. Engineering a final scoring drive, Sara Zakar tossed a beauty to Walsh, and Norbutus ran in her second TD. 1st Stop halted James/Emerson on downs and got the ball back with less than 2 minutes left. Boyle, however, put an exclamation point on the victory as he intercepted the pass as time expired. |
