Championship Game Summary Following a season of highs and lows, The Whalers, with two wins and two losses during the regular season, did all the little things right to defeat Captain’s Round 2 for the field hockey championship. These two teams met in last year’s final with Captain’s on the winning end. The first half was an offensive struggle as the defenses kept the ball in the middle of the field. Amanda Nickerson and Mary Oakman anchored a blanket defense that stalled all efforts from The Whalers for the majority of the first half. It took an impressive individual effort from Leanne Pomeroy, who notched two goals by halftime, to put her team ahead 2-1. Nickerson was the lone scorer for Captain’s. In the second half, The Whalers took advantage of their momentum. Goalie Sophia Spano dueled Captain’s Round 2 on all accounts, pitching a shutout for the remainder of regulation. Whalers’ Pomeroy continued her dominance by adding another goal to give her a hat trick. The Whalers added a nice insurance goal when Hope MacLeod rattled one off the board. At the final whistle, The Whalers tasted sweet revenge and took the title with a 4-1 victory. |
