Women's Field Hockey Fall 1999

Force

Championship Game Summary
Force 4, Fire & Ice 3

Force, last year’s champ, were dominating again this year, returning with nearly the same powerful squad. Fire & Ice, created from “free agents,” were also outstanding. Each team during the season went 4-1; Fire & Ice bested Force 3-1 when the two met in October. So, on this cold championship day, a rematch of the league’s two best teams would decide bragging rights. Force led off the scoring at 5:02 of the first half when Chrissie Ciampa received a beautiful cross pass from Brian Donovan, which she fired past the Fire & Ice goalie.

Force went up 2-0 one minute later when Carolyn Lewenberg walloped the ball into the net. At the ten minute mark of the half, Fire & Ice got on the board with two in a row from captain Iris de Hamer and frontline teammate Katie Miller. With ten seconds left in the half, Iwona Keniksman scored to put Fire & Ice up 3-2 at the half. The second half was every bit as exciting as the first half and, feeling more than a little pressure, Force came out smoking. Lewenberg notched her second goal to tie the game, and Ciampa scored again with the help of another fine set up from Donovan. Force held on to finish the game and retain their championship status.
