Championship Game Summary
Pioneers 3, Sweet Caroline 2
Defending champs the Balls, reincarnated as Sweet Caroline, went undefeated during the season and outscored opponents 32-10. Their opponents in the final, the Pioneers, only lost one game during the season and that was to Sweet Caroline 4-3. In one playoff semifinal, the Pioneers crushed Superwomen 11-0. Sweet Caroline won by forfeit in thern other semifinal.
In the championship, Sweet Caroline scored first at the 12-minute mark as Kathleen Rails took a pass from Lauri Nowlan and put one deep to the board by Pioneers goalkeeper Jess Desrosiers. Nowlan got credit for Sweet Caroline’s second goal when the ball glanced off a Pioneers defender past Desrosiers. Sweet Caroline led 2-0 at the half.
Midway through the second half, the tenacious play of Pioneers attackers Jacquie Francis and Maria Pacelli proved worthwhile as Maureen Walsh scored on a loose ball in the circle. Walsh came in from her defensive spot and rammed the ball by Sweet Caroline goalkeeper Kathleen “Kacy" Kane.
The change of Pioneers goalkeepers at the half helped to make a difference in the game as Desrosiers came on strong offensively to put the Pioneers even with seven minutes left in the game. When it seemed that the game was to go to overtime, Desrosiers brought the ball into the circle, maneuvered around the Sweet Caroline defense and put the ball past the outstretched pad of Kane giving the Pioneers a come-from-behind 3-2 victory over last year’s champions.
