  Championship Game Summary
Sons of Bird defeats Quincy

The men’s basketball season was capped off by an exciting championship game between two undefeated teams, Quincy and Sons of Bird. Led by captain Royce Henry’s strong play off the glass and some stellar shooting from behind the arc by Shane Conklin, Sons of Bird held off a pesky Quincy team to win 66-62. Sons of Bird opened the game with a 9-2 run before Quincy knew what had happened. The run was short- lived, however, as Quincy captain Dan Duggan put on a shooting clinic for those in attendance, draining 2 treys and a pull-up jumper to make the score 11-10. The teams traded blows for the first half, as Quincy’s Ian Kilpatrick stepped up to answer Conklin’s hot hand. With just under two minutes in the half, Sons of Bird opened a 34-30 lead behind  Conklin’s four consecutive buckets from downtown. Quincy responded with a steal at halfcourt and a Tiki Mayben trey, but Sons of Bird held a 37-33 halftime lead.

Mayben and Kilpatrick got hot in the second half, combining for 19 of the team’s 29 points, as Sons of Bird’s defense managed to quiet Dan Duggan after his 13 first half points. Mayben ripped down seven second half rebounds to keep his team in the game, but Sons of Bird’s Jose DeJesus hit three treys to keep Quincy at bay. With under 30 seconds to go and down by seven, Quincy was unable to capitalize on a lane violation and, in spite of a Duggan three-pointer, could not capture the win. Sons of Bird’s Conklin finished the night with 21 points, backed by 5-8 shooting from three-point land, while teammate Henry had a solid 14 point, 11 rebound performance. Mayben’s 19 points and 12 rebounds paved the way for Quincy.
