Championship Game Summary Down early in the first half, ESPN rallied late to take a 3-point lead into halftime and never looked back as they captured the women's championship 44-38 over Blue Steel. Two steals early in the game by Christie Papi put Blue Steel in front 13-6. ESPN, who hadn't played a game en route to the championship, shook off the dust and clamped down defensively by denying a shot attempt at the end of the first half. In the 2nd half with with 14:00 to go, Lindsay Milne hit two free throws to put ESPN up 30-28. ESPN scored the next six points until a free throw from Stephanie Kaplan ended the scoring drought for Blue Steel at the 7 minute mark to make it a seven point game at 36-29. Blue Steel went on a mini-run, but a nice pass from Aqua Bang to Jess Dominik put ESPN up by seven with 3:30 remaining. ESPN would cruise from there to victory. Eileen McRae had a solid game overall for ESPN, scoring 9 points, grabbing 6 rebounds, dishing out 4 assists and amassing 4 steals. For Blue Steel, Kaplan was the leading scorer with 13 points, 9 of those from behind the arc. |
