Championship Game Summary
Team Ramrod 2, Ferris F.C. 1

21 teams competed in the rigorous pool play 2-ball soccer tournament. 14 teams advanced to the single-elimination playoffs with Balls of Fury, a playoff semifinal team, and Braveheart receiving the first-round playoff byes. Team Ramrod, first place in their pool, knocked off Natick & Friends 13-9 & Balls United 15-8, to advance to the semifinal. Also first place in their pool, Ferris F.C. got by Hackerz OMG 18-14 & Shananogans 15-11 to reach the playoff semifinal. And then came the snowstorm! Due to a winter storm, the University closing & subsequent final exams, the semifinals and final were postponed to the beginning of the spring semester. On January 31, the remaining four teams returned to Boyden gym with their spirits re-charged and ready to go. Hopefully, their legs were. Ferris F.C. had little difficulty in dispatching Razzmatazzezz 21-13. Team Ramrod, however, needed a great penalty kick save from keeper JD Georger on Balls of Fury’s Brian Joyce to reach the final. Joyce’s kick could have sent the game into sudden death penalty kicks, but Georger’s stop sealed the win 12-11. Team Ramrod, not daunted by just having played a semifinal, began the 1st half of the championship with a power offense and relentless attack on Ferris F.C. keeper Matt Broderick. Offense standouts Kevin Frechette & Christine Nazario (Nazario notched two goals in the half) did the scoring for Ramrod. Although Ferris F.C. looked a little winded in the half, they fought back to tie the game at 3 with tallies from Adam Darkazalli, who scored twice, and Jill Canavan. In the 2nd half, Team Ramrod really put on an offensive performance. Frechette dominated the scoring with four more goals, while Craig Silver scored twice and Nazario added another. Ferris’s keeper Broderick even left his post and added some offense in an attempt to get back into the game. In the end, Team Ramrod choked off any offensive threats and came away with the 10-4 win.
