Meet the Nutrition Advisors


Bethany Welch

Public Health 17

Bethany fell in love with fitness and working out during high school after joining her local gym and playing sports in high school. Certified in Spinning, TRX, Kick it, Cardio Sport, and general group fitness, Bethany teaches a variety of classes. She is also a Nutrition Advisor and a Personal Trainer through AFAA. Bethany strives to give her participants a fun and challenging workout that will leave them feeling accomplished.

Erica is passionate about health and wellness and enjoys participating in sports and recreational activities. She loves learning about being healthy and applying it to her life as well as sharing the information she learns about with others. Erica is also passionate about baking and cooking and is always looking out for ways to prepare healthier foods. She hopes to become a registered dietician after graduation, and is constantly on the search for new, healthy recipes.

Jaime has always had an interest in nutrition and living a healthy lifestyle, but did not realize that health and wellness could be a lifelong hobby until halfway through her freshman year of college. After switching to the nutrition major, she worked hard to be get hands on experience in the field. On top of being a nutrition advisor here at the Rec Center, Jaime participates in a program where she works with UMass athletes regarding sports performance and nutrition. She also serves as a peer advisor for the UMass Nutrition Department and has learned to love being a source for people in need. She loves working with others and being able to share the importance of nutrition and how it affects our overall health and mindset. When working with Jaime, she hopes to provide a comfortable environment where her and her clients can work as a team to accomplish their goals!

Katie has worked with many chefs and in a variety of kitchens, giving her a good background in cooking and creating recipes.  Most recently she interned at a holistic health center, where she learned the importance of whole, simple foods.  In high school she decided to become a vegetarian, which sparked her interest in nutrition and helping others make decisions regarding their own health.  Come talk to Katie in the wellness center about meal ideas and your diet!

Kathleen has been a competitive runner most of her life, which has sparked her interest in nutrition, health, and wellness. She specializes in vegetarian diets, sports nutrition and the relation between nutrition and mental health. She believes that a balanced, healthy diet and lifestyle not only promotes good physical health but mental health as well. Since becoming a student at UMass, Kathleen has discovered a love for yoga, cooking, and showing others how eating healthy can be enjoyable! Kathleen loves working with people is excited to meet with clients and inspire them to make healthy choices that fit their lifestyle.  She hopes to become a registered dietitian after graduation.

Paige Conti

Paige Conti strives to lead a healthy and wholesome life. She takes what she learns in class and tries to apply and incorporate it into her own life to make better choices for herself. Paige believes that creating healthy habits, rather than restrictions, is a way to keep a balanced and healthy lifestyle permanent. She also has a passion for fitness and feels that keeping the body healthy through physical activity and proper nutrition come hand in hand when trying to achieve good overall health. Paige is excited to take on new clients and inspire them to make the right nutritional choices while they balance all the many things that come with being a college student

I am from New Jersey. Coming to UMass, I really found a love for nutrition during my freshman year. I will always encourage my clients to have a positive outlook on food and eating. I will encourage them to make healthy choices and educate them on the benefits of eating healthier. I will make sure my clients feel comfortable and welcomed when visiting me for advising. I am excited to share fun recipes with my clients as well. Overall, eating healthy enjoying life, and feeling good can come hand in hand if you make small changes to your lifestyle habits. -- I also teach Cardio Kickboxing at the campus rec.

Rachel is passionate about leading a healthy lifestyle through proper nutrition and physical activity. Rachel’s main focus is on holistic nutrition; more specifically helping others learn and incorporate a whole foods plant based diet. She has earned a certificate in Holistic Health Coaching from the Institute of Integrative Nutrition, where she further learned about several dietary theories and innovative coaching skills. Rachel enjoys running and biking and is further interested in the importance of nutrition on athletic performance. She welcomes any individual looking to improve their diets and overall well-being. Rachel is excited to work with potential new clients at the Wellness Center!

Shauntel Farland

From Burlington, MA, Shauntel ran Cross-Country and Track & Field from her freshman year of high school until her sophomore year of college before transferring to UMass Amherst. Currently, she is pursuing her passion for wellness and fitness through personal training, wellness blogging, and nutrition advising. She believes that health is a form of self-love and makes it her personal mission to show others that exercise and healthy eating can be fun and tasty.

Shelagh has a holistic approach to health and wellness and believes that proper nutrition and treating your body right can help everyone be their best self. Shelagh specializes in vegetarian diets while being passionate about sports nutrition. In addition to being passionate about nutrition, she also has a love for fitness and teaches spinning at the Recreation Center. Shelagh is excited to meet new people and work with students to help them improve their diets and feel their best! b She hopes to work in community nutrition after graduation.

After coming to UMass as a business major, Tara decided to switch to nutrition. She loves to educate others on nutrition and the effects that it has in everyday life and performance. By learning about nutrition and overall wellness, Tara hopes to help you make small changes that will support healthy changes in your life and make you feel better than ever. She has experience working with dietitians in many other fields, and has been working for Campus Recreation as a nutrition advisor since 2015.
