Lifeguard Certification

The lifeguard certification course will be offered during the 2012 spring semester.
Prerequisites: To take the course, you must be able to pass the swim tests:

Swim 300 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Candidates may swim the front crawl or breaststroke or a combination, but swimming on the back or side is not permitted. Swim goggles may be used.

Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds. Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. The face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not permitted. Surface dive, feet-first or head-first, to a depth of 7-10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object. Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object and keeping the face at or near the surface to be able to take a breath. Candidates should not swim the distance under water. Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.

Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs. Candidates should place their hands under the armpits.
Full Certification -- $250 (credit card, cash or money order only; personal checks not accepted)
Includes lifeguard certification, standard first aid and CPR/AED for lifeguards
Re-certification -- $175 (credit card, cash or money order only; personal checks not accepted)
Must have current lifeguard certification or within 30 days of expiration
Eligibility: Open to current UMass students, faculty and staff only
Swim Test: Sunday, March 11 @ 4pm (Boyden Pool)
Class Dates: Sundays, April 1, April 15, April 22 & April 29
Class Time: 12-7pm
Class Location: Boyden pool & classroom
Registration: Must register in advance @ the Recreation Center (room 112). To register, see office manager David Litterer Monday-Friday 10am-6pm. Registration begins Monday, February 13.
About the Instructor
James Miller has been a 30+ year educator in Hampshire County as a high school science teacher. He is currently the athletic director at Northampton High School. He has been an American Red Cross instructor in lifeguarding, CPR and first aid for over 30 years. He is also an outdoor emergency care instructor for the National Ski Patrol.
