Pool Policies

  • Lifeguard instructions must be promptly obeyed and followed.
  • Patron must present UCard (with recreation privileges), guest pass or summer facility pass to use the pool.
  • Swim Wear -- Proper swimwear is required. UMass gray shorts, cut-offs and leotards are PROHIBITED. Swim caps are optional.
  • Each participant must take a cleansing shower before entering pools. Participants with skin diseases, inflamed eyes, discharges from the nose or ears or any communicable disease are PROHIBITED from entering pools.
  • Follow proper procedures for pool use. Horseplay and inappropriate activities, such as running, are not permitted in the pool, on the deck or on the diving boards.
  • Any person in a condition deemed unsafe for the pool activities will be asked to leave the pool area.
  • Balls, fins, masks, snorkels, etc. are not permitted during recreation hours. 
  • Use of diving boards or starting blocks is not permitted during recreation hours.
  • Glass containers and objects are not permitted in pool areas.
  • Patrons must be at least age 6 to use the pools. Patrons age 6-17 must be accompanied and supervised by an adult sponsor with recreation membership.

Family Swim

At specified times, the pools will be open for the families of students, faculty and staff. See recreation schedules for family swim times. The following policies are in effect:

  • Each family member must have a valid UCard with recreation access. Recreation access can be purchased at the Campus Recreation office in 215 Boyden.
  • Patrons must be at least age 6 to use the pools. Patrons age 6-17 must be accompanied and supervised by an adult sponsor with recreation membership.
  • All swimmers must adhere to pool rules.
  • Swimmers with beginning skills must remain in the shallow end of pool.
  • UMass students, faculty and staff are permitted to use pools during family swim.

Disabled Swim at Totman

Disabled swimmers are given preference in lanes 1, 2, and 3 at Totman during posted disabled swim times. Lanes not used by disabled swimmers during those times may be used by non-disabled swimmers.

These policies are to ensure the safety of all participants. Failure to comply with these policies and with the lifeguard’s request may result in loss of privileges to use the pool.
