Academic Programs

Four residential programs are housed in Writing Butterfield.

English TAP

This program provides an opportunity for a group of first year Pre-English Major students to live in the same residence hall and share several common classes during the fall semester, including College Writing and English 200. Course assignments within English TAP provide opportunities for participating students to work together in class, as well as on homework, and to form study groups. The program is open to invited students majoring in English.

Butterfield RAP

Students choose from a list of courses that highlight writing. This program is open to all first-year students interested in living in Central. The classes selected are courses that will satisfy UMass general education requirements. This is a perfect opportunity for those interested in writing or the written word, and is open to students of all majors.

Creativity Learning Community

This learning community is open to first year Commonwealth College students, of any major, interested in pursuing writing and literary analysis in greater depth. As a part of this unique program, you will be co-enrolled in College Writing and an introductory literature course during the fall semester (both of which will meet in Butterfield). During the spring semester, you will be enrolled in a section of Honors 191D, Dean’s Book, with fellow Creativity students.

IMPACT! Learning Community

Designed for UMass students with an interest in Community Service Learning, IMPACT! offers the opportunity to be enrolled in College Writing and American Diversity (with a focus on writing) with fellow IMPACT! students. During the year, as a part of this program, you will participate in 30 hours of community service learning each semester and have a weekly seminar course to shape your experience. In the second semester you will take the Dean’s Book course, a requirement for Commonwealth College students.
