As the semester winds down and the weather gets colder, the amount of work and stress is drastically increasing for students. In this month's edition of 608, the BDIC newsletter, we hope to provide you with good news and fun events to take your mind off final exams and research papers.

DECEMBER EVENTS

Calling All Knitters!

In December, we will continue having our weekly knitting circle in the BDIC office -- 608 Goodell. Bring your knitting, crocheting, or whatever is your craft of the moment! All are welcome, even non-BDIC students. Meetings are on Thursdays at noon, so stop on by!

Amazing Computer Creations

You are invited to meet artists, programmers, and producers at the Multimedia & 3-D Computer Graphics Showcase. You will have the opportunity to see 3-D creatures and great animated motion, as well as the ability to interact with multimedia projects. Additionally, the Fall 2004 Computer Science classes will be exhibiting their own multimedia projects, games, and computer animations. The Showcase is being held on December 10 at 4:30 pm, room 150/151 in the Computer Science building.

Environmental Lecture Series

Dr. Richard Luthy of Stanford University will be presenting this month's talk for the Environmental Lecture Series, entitled "New Views on Sediment Chemistry, Toxicity, and Treatment." Dr. Luthy is a professor of civil and environmental engineering. The lecture will be held at 4 pm on December 6, room 507 Goodell. Music to Our Ears

Come support your fellow students at the Student Composer's Concert, December 10 at 8 pm. The concert will be held at the newly renovated Bezanson Recital Hall, free of admission.

Visiting Artist Guest Lecture

UMass alum Daniel Zeller will be giving a lecture on December 9 at 4:30 pm in Herter 227. Zeller is an experienced sculptor, printmaker and draftsman. Zeller said in a 1991 publication "The process of drawing for me is a form of travel where info is consumed, digested and regurgitated." This travel is an exploration into the uncharted and hidden. He sets up rules for himself, one of them being "always respect what has already been put on the page, as if every line were sovereign territory, not to be crossed or obscured." He is interested in combining macro and micro elements of information in his work. He uses the minimal means of paper and pencil, or paper and ink. The resulting imagery is extremely intricate, suggesting maps, diagrams and satellite imagery.

You Are Invited!

Come one, come all to the BDIC Winter Holiday Party! The celebration will be held in the BDIC office (608 Goodell) on December 15, 5-8 p.m. and will be an excellent opportunity to meet alumni. There will also be music and art displays. Come take a break from studying and enjoy some good food and good fun with fellow BDIC students, both past and present!

Tension Breakers

As a reminder, December 13 is the last day of classes and finals begin on December 16. The last day for finals is December 22. When the work and stress starts getting you down, head to the Campus Center Concourse for Tension Breakers! There will be free food, giveaways, and massages from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m., just waiting for you!

BDIC Fashion

BDIC T-shirts are still on sale in the office, for just $10! The light blue shirts feature the BDIC logo on the front, with the pink flamingo mascot and slogan ("Stand Out in the Crowd!") on the back. Show your pride by wearing the shirt around campus!

TV/Radio Internships

For those interested in TV/radio internships, UVC-TV 19 is having an open station meeting on December 6 to discuss possibilities in the field. The meeting will be held at 7 pm, in the basement of the Student Union, room 216.

Graphic Design & Technical Writing Internships

Dana Sebastian

ALUMNI NEWS

Stephen Kelly, BDIC '02, recently started a website design company in Amherst. While he was at UMass, Stephen was the BDIC webmaster, and was responsible for many of the website's improvements. Stephen will have a book published by Prentice-Hall in May, '05, in conjunction with UMass Professor F. S. Hill, Jr. The book is entitled Computer Graphics With Open GL. He has also started a graphic design magazine called 4TWK. Congratulations, Stephen!
