BDIC Civic Engagement Track

CivX is shorthand for the Civic Engagement track within the BDIC major. CivX students are BDIC majors whose concentrations are in civic engagement, plus something else. This, "X", might be e.g. the arts, environmental justice, social entrepreneurship, community health, information technology, or whatever discipline you would like to combine with civic engagement.

CivX students are BDIC majors, who fulfill all the requirements of the BDIC program, plus an additional set of requirements specific to the Civic Engagement track. Amongst other things, CivX requires students to take at least one course drawn from a list of approved courses in each of five core content areas - Social Justice, Civics and Political Theory, Public Policy, Community/Political Organizing, and Diverse Publics.

The CivX Track was introduced in 2010 to fulfill the longstanding goal for both UMass students and faculty. The requirements for the CivX track were developed in collaboration with the UMass Provost's Committee on Service Learning and the Office of Civic Engagement and Service-Learning.
