Chinese Language and Literature

Students must achieve a grade of C or better in a course for it to be counted toward the major. Students must have a minimum GPA in the major of 2.0 in order to satisfy the requirements in Chinese Language and Literature. No pass/fail options will be accepted for those courses used toward completion of the requirements for the major. (Courses designated as mandatory pass/fail, however, may be considered for credit toward this major.  Consult your advisor.) Double majors need to complete the junior year writing requirement in only one of their majors. Only 6 credits from other institutions within and without the 5-College consortium may be applied to this major. No more than 6 credits may be earned for the 110/120/126/127 or 246/247 sequences.

Japanese Language and Literature

Certificate in Asian and Asian American Studies

I. PURPOSE

The Certificate in Asian and Asian American Studies DOES NOT constitute a major degree program. Our intent in making this certificate program available to students is that the Certificate should complement a regular degree program for those who would like to complete a minor concentration in Asian and Asian American Studies.

II. ELIGIBILITY
  • A student majoring in ANY FIELD on this campus or at the other 4 colleges (Amherst, Hampshire, Smith, Mt. Holyoke) is eligible for the Certificate
  • A student majoring in Chinese or Japanese is eligible for the Certificate
  • Any student who has been accepted for a special program at UMass (e.g. Continuing Education, University Without Walls, Inquiry program, BDIC, etc) is also eligible for the Certificate

III. BASIC REQUIREMENTS

The successful completion of 24 credits in courses within the broad area of Asian studies with a grade of C or better (no pass/fail allowed) is required. Courses should be chosen from the UMass and/or Five-College Asian area studies course lists.

IV. SPECIFICATIONS
  • The required 24 credits must be selected from at least 3 distinct disciplines (e.g., linguistics, literature, history, geography, etc.);
  • For students transferring to the University, only 1/2 of the total 24 credits (12 credits) will be recognized from another college; and, of these 12 credits, a maximum of 9 credits will be recognized from work done in overseas exchange programs;
  • The required 24 credits must cover two different cultural heritages (e.g., Japan, China, Vietnam, etc.);
  • No more than 12 credits may be taken in any one department;
  • No more than a total of 6 credits of language (or combination of languages) may be counted toward the fulfillment of the 24 credits;
  • Non-academic credits will not be accepted toward the award of the Certificate.

Minor in Chinese

All students taking a minor in Chinese are expected to complete a total of 24 credits of course work. If a student begins the minor by taking language courses at a level above the elementary, neither credit nor exemption will be given for the lower level language course(s). Students who begin taking language courses at a level above the elementary should take advanced language courses in order to accumulate sufficient credits for the minor. Students who begin taking language courses at a level above the elementary may challenge advanced language courses for credit by taking a 'Credit by Special Examination' test. This is a fee per credit exam arranged in conjunction with the Registrar's Office. Contact the undergraduate major advisor in Chinese in this department for details. Courses for the minor may not be taken pass/ fail. Students must have a minimum GPA in the Minor of 2.0 in order to satisfy the requirements for the minor.
