Areas of Research
Stephen Miller teaches courses in medieval Japanese literature, Japanese
Buddhism and literature, translation, classical Japanese language, and Asian
homosexualities in film and literature. His primary research focuses on the
intersections of Japanese Buddhism and poetry in the early imperial poetry
anthologies (10th-12th c), and he is currently finishing a monograph on that
topic. He has also published translations of Japanese poetry (waka), edited a
book entitled "Partings at Dawn: An Anthology of Japanese Gay Literature," and
written articles and presented papers on topics such as cognitive science,
literature and Buddhism and the place of women in Japanese films and TV programs
with gay themes.
