Stephen M. ForrestVisiting Assistant Professor of JapanesePh.D. in Japanese Literature from Harvard University, 2005 Assistant Undergraduate Advisor - Japanese
Stephen Forrest focusses his research on the Japanese poetic tradition and its role in the construction of national culture and identity, especially during the early modern and modern eras (1600~1945). In addition to revising and expanding for publication his dissertation on the classical poet Nôin, he is working on a monograph tracing the development of poetic monuments as a form of cultural transmission during the Edo and Meiji eras. He teaches manuscript and woodblock-print Japanese, using where possible materials from the Benjamin S. Lyman Collection at UMass. His interest in the historical connection between UMass Amherst and Hokkaidō University has led to a project examining Japanese and Western representations of Hokkaidô during the bakumatsu, Meiji and Taishô eras.
