Bruce BairdAssistant Professor of JapanesePh.D. in Japanese Language and Literature from the University of Pennsylvania, 2004 Chief Undergraduate Advisor - Japanese
Bruce Baird came to the department in Fall 2005 after serving as an adjunct at the College of William and Mary. His research interests lie in contemporary Japanese Theater and Dance (butô), and in Japanese modern intellectual history. He has published and translated articles on the Japanese modern dance form butô. He is currently working on revising his dissertation "Butô and the Burden of History" into a book. He has also designed upper-level courses in Japanese intellectual history and contemporary Japanese theater, and is designing a General Education course on Japanese manga (comic books) and anime (animation).
