  • Location: Herter 106
  • Time: Mon. 4-6 pm
  • Instructor: Juliette Lee
  • How do Asian-American women writer's negotiate the fluid lines of language and identity? This directed study is meant to investigate just that. We will read poetry and cross-genre work by women representing a variety of Asian-American ethnicities, including Eileen Tabios, Hoa Nguyen, Theresa Hay-Kyung Cha, Bhanu Kapil Rider, and Pamela Lu. This will be a weekly discussion and workshop centered around published and student writing. Goals: To introduce students to a wide array of contemporary Asian-American women authors. Students will examine these women's use of language and how it intersects their ideas of identity. Students are strongly encouraged to produce their own creative work examining language and identity.

1 Credit: The student will complete all readings in addition to attending and participating in all classes. A short written response will be due during the course (3-5 pages). This paper may include but is not limited to an examination of a single book, a body of work, or work from various authors structured around a particular interest point.

2 Credits: Same as 1 Credit. In addition, the student will facilitate one discussion about a particular author. They should prepare a short introduction to the author (1 page) and a series of discussion questions.

3 Credits: Same as 1-2 credit, with the addition of a final project between 15-20 pages in length of creative material including a brief analysis.

All students are strongly encouraged (but not required) to bring in their own creative material every two to three weeks. This may consist of either 3-5 pages of poems or one short story (5-10 pages) to be distributed to classmates the week prior to its discussion.

As a Pass/Fail course, no work will receive grades, but rather extensive comments. Students will pass if they complete assignments and do not miss more than 2 classes over the course of the semester. Late assignments should be discussed with me prior to the established due date.
