- This course examines social inequality in China across three time periods: traditional China, the Mao years (1949-76) and the post Mao era. Three sources of social inequality are emphasized: social class, gender and ethnicity. No previous study of China is assumed; emphasis is on China today. Readings include Mao for Beginners (a documentary comic book), Modern China (a short textbook), and a packet of articles. Requirements include three multiple choice tests and a three part term paper that examines one source of social inequality (class, gender or ethnicity) across the three time periods. The paper is to be completed in three installments. There is no final examination. For more info, see the course website: http://www-unix.oit.umass.edu/~smodel/soc332_index.htm. An optional one credit honors section, “China in Film”, is open to any student registered in Social Change in China. It meets Wednesday evenings at a time to be decided by the students. Participation involves watching a movie a week, participating in the post-film discussion and writing a short reaction paper. For more information on Sociology 332 H03, Class # 39677, go to the course web site and click on “Honors Section”. Non-Sociology majors and Sociology majors who don’t need jr writing, enroll in Section B, Class # 39686. Soc majors who need jr writing enroll in Section A, Class # 39382.
