Guest Seminar | Dr. Nathaniel Silver

New Perspectives for an Inclusive Art History and Museum Practice

Guest Scholar: Nathaniel Silver, William and Lia Poorvu Curator of the Collection, Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum
Curator of Boston's Apollo: Thomas McKeller and John Singer Sargent (Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, through October 12, 2020)

The question of how to de-colonize curatorial work, and re-think art historical narratives from a perspective of equity and social justice will form the core of our seminar this week. Our guest curator will give us an opportunity to discuss the exhibition he has recently curated on the collaborative relationship between John Singer Sargent and his African-American model Thomas McKeller. Nathaniel Silver's curatorial strategies involved working with McKeller's descendants and community members in order to develop a model for inclusive collaboration.

Note: This is a graduate level seminar, and if you are interested in participating, you should come prepared, having completed assigned readings.
