New York’s original Penn Station, designed by McKim, Mead & White, was a grand example of the Neo-Classical architectural style that dominated public building design throughout the 19th century and into the beginning of the 20th century. There existed a long tradition of using the Classically inspired aesthetic in architecture, yet its use in Peen Station pays little mind to the exciting, new, and innovative developments which the railway station represented. My thesis seeks to examine the choice to apply the Neo-Classical style to the relatively new and modern space of the train station.
