New England Graduate Media Symposium
UMass MFA Candidate, Bibiana Medkova, will be presenting their work as part of the 6th Annual New England Graduate Media Symposium, which invites you to explore different interpretations of the word “journey” with us. From road trips and spiritual quests to border crossings and the many ways that our lives change, we will revisit the journeys that have shaped and defined us through various art forms. Works of graduate students in media and the arts are represented from 10+ New England Institutions!

FRAME2019:OTHERWORLD
The Screen@SAB and the Department of Art are pleased to present FRAME2019: OTHERWORLD! A juried moving image exhibition featuring new work by undergraduate BFA, BA, and BDIC art students. Congratulations to the following artists whose works were accepted into the show! Miles Briggs, Chloe Bordeau, Luis Canches, Lydia Giangregorio, Elysia Hentschel, Jazzy Kophengnavong, Daria Lee, Mackenzie Matscherz, Vivian Nguyen, Vy Nguyen, Suzie Rivera, Henry Schneiderbeck, and Ali Xu.
Show runs March 18 - April 9.
Visiting Artist Lecture - Paul Pfeiffer
Known for his innovative manipulation of digital media, Pfeiffer recasts the visual language of pop spectacle to examine how images shape our perception of ourselves and the world. Sampling footage from YouTube, cable television, and other sources, he uses these as an occasion to plumb the depths of contemporary culture, assessing its racial, religious, and technological dimensions. At the same time, Pfeiffer's objects and images function diachronically, establishing profound genealogies that connect contemporary culture and its many particularities — professional sports, televised game shows, Michael Jackson, etc.- to the long, seemingly remote histories of art, media, religion, politics, and nationhood.

A/E: Body in Flux
A/E: Body In Flux is an exhibition which explores the tension between Affected and Effected states of being as experienced by the human body over a lifetime.
In this show, 7 visual artists draw deeply from rooted personal experiences to address the complexities of the body in these states of transition, touching upon themes of disease, death, gender, identity, discrimination, inclusion, union and vulnerability. The work presented here is an expression of the body, sometimes the artists own, as the author and location of these ongoing transformations.

Ellen Grobman: There, Not Here
In this new body of work, Grobman aims to bring something into being, disrupt it, and then flirt with its destruction. The boundary of something existing and then not—echoes throughout her paintings.

Pioneer Valley Excellence in Teaching Award
Each year the Grinspoon Foundation recognizes teachers across the Pioneer Valley for the excellent job they do in teaching. Many of our Art Ed graduates have been the proud recipients if this prestegious honor. Congratulations to Christie Bianchi Chisholm, MA-Art Ed '11, of Springfield Central High School for being one of this year's honored recipients.
MAEA Nominations and Ceremony
Don't forget that the Massachusetts Art Education Association will bestow its annual awards on educators and supporters of arts education this month. Anne Charron, art teacher and Department Chair at West Springfield High School will be receiving the award for Massachusetts Secondary Art Teacher of the year at the event on March 16. Anne is currently co-supervising two of our BFA student teachers, Ryan Jobb and Nicole Zadykowicz. Anne received her MA-Art Education from UMass, and is currently writing her dissertation for her PhD through the College of Education.

Wassaic Printmaking Fellowship
The Wassaic Project seeks a part-time Print Fellow to support our Print Program and Artist Residency based in Wassaic, NY. The Print Fellow will live and work in Wassaic, NY and manage our print shop, provide support on projects by artist-in-residence and visiting artists, and produce Wassaic promotional materials. Print Fellow will also work closely with 6 to 8 Print Edition Artists to produce a print edition with each (one print from each edition is part of compensation, too). The Print Fellow will have an opportunity to work closely with community of artists, and has 24-hour access to our print Shop.

UMCA Student Educators Practicum
Academic Year 2019/2020

This year-long practicum at UMass will train you to be a museum gallery educator and guide. You will develop a number of valuable skills you can use in museums and also in a wide variety of academic and professional settings. The fall semester is dedicated to researching the artist/s and art that you will be introducing to our visitors You’ll develop skills in public speaking, learn about the various roles of a working museum, and design your own tour for range of age groups
(UMass students, K-12 visitors, and the general public).

2019 Summer Internships at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston
The MFA just published descriptions for over thirty summer internship opportunities. Departments include: Conservation & Collections Management; Development; Education; Exhibitions & Design; Intellectual Property; Volunteer and Community Engagement; and several curatorial departments.
Jabberwocky Submissions
Jabberwocky publishes once at the end of the semester and you can submit:
- Up to three pieces of short fiction
- Up to six poems
- Up to three pieces of literary criticism/nonfiction
- And as much visual art as you’d like!
All majors are encouraged to submit, so tell your friends! The submission deadline is April 3. Please email all submissions as attachments to:

Paperbark Call for Visual Art
Paperbark Literary Magazine is looking for new visual art for their cover image. Here, we work to recognize harm and to unlearn its violent boundaries. We work to grow in tune with symbiosis, equity, and truth telling. Here, we honor what is daring, what dwells in liminality, what is strengthened through multiplicity. Submitters of underrepresented identities are strongly encouraged to send works.

Locust Projects Summer Program
Locust Projects, Miami’s longest running not-for-profit, is seeking proposals for LAB MFA our summer residency and exhibition program. This paid opportunity is open to currently enrolled studio art MFA students and provides a project and travel budget. Applications are due on March 17th.
