Artist Statement

In an attempt to understand the inherent motives and desires of the “human condition” and the increasing disconnection between science/spirituality, humans/nature, mind/body, and real/false experiences of reality; I come to realize these inquiries through a variety of mediums including sculpture, video, sound and installation. Through the sensory experience of space, materials, objects and sound, I hope to create a sense of liminality and transcendence to challenge the way one perceives reality (life, death, nature, etc.), and to question the possible ways of knowing or attaining knowledge other than through language.
The use of non-traditional, and as of recent, natural materials such as glycerin, salt, beeswax, honey, lead and iron employ a corporeal and sensory response that is immediate in both personal and collective experience and memory. The reference of alchemical symbolism, with its rich, encoded and seemingly nonsensical layers of meaning are used as a vehicle to further the conversation through metaphor and allegory rather than through rational thought.
