www.kelliscottkelley.com

Kelli is an Assistant Professor in the Painting area at Louisiana State
University in Baton Rouge where she currently lives with her husband
and son.

Since receiving her MFA in Sculpture from the University of Massachusetts in 1986, Kelly's work has primarily comprised of mixed media narrative paintings, and surreal performances. Kelley's paintings have been exhibited in many venues including: Bangalore University in Bangalore, India, the Contemporary Arts Museum in Houston, the Museum of Modern Art in Fort Worth, TX, Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art in Boulder, CO, Spectrum Gallery in San Francisco, Mixture Contemporary Art in Houston. She has upcoming exhibitions at Cordell Taylor Gallery in Denver, Hooks-Epstein Gallery in Houston and Marguerite Oestriker Gallery in New Orleans. Performance collaborations with her husband, composer Bill Kelley have been performed at Diverse Works in Houston, TX, Arlington Museum in Arlington, TX, Rice University in Houston, and many other spaces. Their collaborative video piece, Plantationland, premiered at the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston. In 2003 Kelley was awarded a Louisiana Division of the Arts Individual Artist Grant. Kelley is an Assistant Professor in the Painting area at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge where she currently lives with her husband and son.

In my mixed media paintings and drawings I want to achieve what Phillip Guston calls a state of “unearthly stillness”. Through personal and universal icons my work explores multiple states of reality.
Symbolic figures, animals, and objects appear in narratives, which explore the human exploitation of animals. We love some animals and sweetly distort them in books to entertain and teach our children lessons. We also grow animals in inhumane conditions, slaughter them and cause their extinction. I appropriate images of animals from my son’s picture books, popular culture and other diverse sources to conjure images that reflect on this human and animal link.
