Congratulations to Kathleen Lugosch, Director of the graduate program in Architecture at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, who, on Wednesday, November 20, was awarded a Boston Society of Architects 2013 Women in Design Award of Excellence at the ArchitectureBoston Expo! Established in 2000, the annual Women in Design Award of Excellence is presented "in recognition of a person who has designed her own life in design, whose work exemplifies the best of process and practice, and who uses a position of achievement to give back to the world of design and to the community at large.” The entire UMass Amherst Architecture+Design program congratulates Kathleen on this honor and also expresses sincere thanks for her continued dedication to developing inclusive architectural education and practice in our region.
In 1995, when Lugosch joined the full time faculty of the interior design program (now Architecture+Design) at UMass Amherst, she was “stunned to realize there was not one accredited architecture degree program in a public school in New England…” In her acceptance speech on Wednesday at the Women in Design Awards Ceremony and Luncheon, Lugosch recalled, “I wanted to change that.” Since receiving degree program status in 2005, the Master of Architecture program at UMass Amherst continues to “[be] the only path to an architecture license, to a professional career in architecture, through public education in New England.” The Architecture+Design core faculty (of which seventy percent are female) has designed, and continues to design, an incredibly rigorous, valuable, interdisciplinary, and approachable curricula for students who study architecture on the UMass flagship campus. Lugosch and her colleagues have developed a program that continues to grow each year, while remaining true to its founding principles. On Wednesday, Lugosch described an “ethos of inclusion” that defines and “permeates our program.” This is evident in the program’s myriad avenues for members of the UMass Amherst, Five Colleges, Western Massachusetts, and greater New England communities to pursue an education in architecture and design.
Architecture+Design is thrilled to congratulate Kathleen Lugosch on receipt of this award! This is an exciting time for Architecture+Design at UMass Amherst. On the evening of November 20, in addition to celebrating Kathleen’s receipt of the 2013 Women in Design Award of Excellence, members of the Architecture+Design community, including faculty, alumni, and students, came together with members of Campus Planning, the Building Construction Technology (BCT) program, the Landscape Architecture and Regional Planning (LARP) Department, and Leers Weinzapfel Associates (LWA) to celebrate the start of the design process for the new, Integrated Design Building (IDB). The reception was held at the offices of LWA in Boston, MA. The Integrated Design Building, which will house Architecture+Design, BCT, and LARP and will be designed by LWA, is slated to open on the UMass Amherst campus in 2017.
