Department of Architecture faculty were well represented at this year’s 2020 EAAE-ARCC International Conference and 2nd Valencia International Biennial of Research in Architecture at the Polytechnic University in Valencia, Spain (and remotely). The focus of the conference was "Architecture + the City" with panels addressing new professional and research practices. Several faculty members presented papers:
Professor Ray Mann presented “Seeing beyond cities,” an assessment of methods used to calculate greenhouse gas (GHG) consumption in urban, suburban, and exurban settings, a subset of her book research on rethinking domestic life in the age of climate change and its implications for design.
Associate Professor Carey Clouse presented “Considering Ladakhi self-sufficiency under climate change, COVID-19, and beyond.”
Associate Professor Caryn Brause presented an interdisciplinary methods paper titled “Transferring visual methods from design to social science to advance built environment research.”
At the Architectural Humanities Research Association 2020 Virtual Conference, "Housing and the City", Associate Professor Pari Riahi presented a paper: "Retracing the Public Voids". The paper examines the possible future(s) of the open and public grounds at the foot of the large social housing projects in the suburbs of Paris and is a continuation of Riahi's ongoing research on those grounds.
Associate Professor Ajla Aksamija recently presented a keynote address and participated in a panel discussion at the Illinois Institute of Technology's Symposium, "Human Behavior, Performance, & Built Environments". Her presentation titled, “Innovation and Future Technologies in Architecture: The Role of Building Performance Research”, discussed innovations in architecture, relationships between scientific research and design, and the role of building performance research.
Aksamija will also share her research at the Facades+ Conference, "Facade Design + Construction in the Southeast". Her presentation will focus on design methods for high-performance facade systems, passive design techniques, thermal performance, and the impacts of climate change on facades' performance.
