Skinner Building Study, Holyoke

In the Spring of 2005 the City of Holyoke applied for a demolition permit for the Skinner Building in South Holyoke. In response to the possibility of its destruction a study to explore the possible re-development opportunities for the Skinner Building and strategize for the preservation of this Holyoke landmark was initiated.

Graduate and undergraduate students from the UMass Architecture + Design Program and the UMass Department of History, in conjunction with the HUD sponsored COPC (Community Outreach Partnership Center) for Holyoke have been the primary researchers for this project. The work has been coordinated and compiled by Professor Joseph Krupczynski of UMass Architecture + Design Program.

By combining historic research and preliminary design concepts with an analysis of the potential fiscal strategies and user profiles the study hopes to outline a plan that will allow this important structure to play a key role in the economic revitalization and cultural development of South Holyoke.
